In the UK, the threat of the Corona Virus has caused mass panic and confusing amongst people as to what they should or should not be doing. This week, the Government has advised the over 70’s to ‘self-isolate’ for a period of four months, which in turn has sent the country in to a tail spin.
Reduce Social Activity
Meanwhile, in Scotland they have advised the elderly population to reduce their social activities including going to pubs, clubs and bingo halls, but have yet to advise them to isolate totally at home. Scottish Health Secretary Jeane Freeman said, they have no plans as yet in Scotland for the over 70’s to self isolate for up to four months, for “ their own protection” as Nick Hancock, UK Health Secretary said earlier this week. Mr Hancock set out the guidelines for the UK to protect the elderly and most vulnerable of society against the Covid-19 virus, they recommend they self isolate for a period of up to four months. This would mean bingo halls that are mostly frequented by the older generation would be directly impacted by this decision.
Bingo Is The Highlight Of The Week
Gala Bingo manager in Possilpark said bingo is a huge social part of people’s lives and going out to their local bingo hall once a week is the highlight for most. Following the Governments advice, all surfaces are being regularly wiped down with antibacterial sprays and advice on hand washing has been widely recommended. For some of the older, more regular customers this is the only time they can get out, as some of their close families don’t live locally. It’s not only pubs, clubs and bingo halls that have so far been affected, churches are advising parishioners to stay away if they are presenting any flu-like symptoms. Hymn books are being removed, coin collections are not being passed around and strict hygiene rules are being implemented in churches and church halls.
