The UK Gambling Commission Faces Backlash Against Harsh Handling of Gambling Addiction

The gambling industry has come under attack over the past few years by lawmakers and lobby groups. Lawmakers in the UK fear the United Kingdom Gambling Commission (UKGC) is overstepping the mark in regards to gambling rules for tackling gambling-related harm. The all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on betting and gaming are facilitators in the fight against gambling-related harm but believe the UKGC is implementing ‘irresponsible responsible gambling resources’. The UK Gambling Commission Faces Backlash Against Harsh Handling of Gambling Addiction

Irresponsible Responsible Gambling Resources

The UKGC has gained more power to implement draconian rules upon gambling operators, after targeting fixed-odds betting terminals, to lowering the max stake on a wager. The APPG, in a report conducted last year, stated the UKGC needed urgent attention claiming the regulator’s methods are far too strict. At the rate of pace, the UKGC is going, they are set to destroy the UK Gambling industry and players will then turn to unregulated black markets which would be catastrophic. The APPG urges UK legislators to act and place special measures on the UKGC if they continue to plough ahead with abhorrent regulations. The Guardian reported in 2020 the UK’s problem gambling rate was 1.4%, in 2021 it was down to 0.7% proving the current controls were enough and further restrictions on UK operators would be irrelevant.

APPG Facing Scrutiny

The APPG is also under the spotlight as a report revealed thousands of pounds worth of freebies from gambling companies had been accepted by APPG members. Last week, Labour MP Conor McGinn, chair of the APPG resigned because of the report. Many responsible gambling groups believe the UKGC is not tough enough and believe stricter controls are needed. It’s a fine balance between operators taking responsibility for its players and regulators taking a step too far and totally destroying the UK gambling industry.
