In a landmark move, the UK government are to introduce new stake limits for online slot games, specifically targeting young players under 25. Starting in September, players aged 18 to 24 can only place a maximum stake of £2 per spin, while those aged 25 years and above face a slightly higher limit of £5. The decision was taken to reduce the risks associated with online slot games, which are notorious for their addictive nature and significant financial losses.
Unlike land-based counterparts, online slot games have been a topic of concern due to the lack of statutory stake limits. This has led to fears of binge play and life-altering losses. To address these risks, the UK government has taken the initiative to introduce stake limits based on age. This is because young adults are more vulnerable to gambling harm due to their ongoing neurological development and lower disposable incomes. This age group has the highest average problem gambling score among all age groups.
Consultation and Support
The introduction of stake limits comes after a ten-week consultation period that received support from industry stakeholders, academics, treatment providers, and individuals. UK Gambling Minister Stuart Andrew highlighted the evidence pointing towards online slots having a much higher rate of problem gambling, emphasising the need for protective measures, especially for young adults. Organisations like GambleAware welcome the announcement. CEO Zoë Osmond praised it as a crucial step in safeguarding young people from the dangers of high-risk gambling products.
The new rules will be implemented gradually through secondary legislation, ensuring operators have time to comply. The government’s broader strategy includes proposals mentioned in their white paper, such as introducing a statutory levy for research, prevention, and treatment and financial risk assessments to prevent huge losses.
While the new stake limits represent a significant step towards reducing gambling harm, they are part of a comprehensive package aimed at modernising the UK gambling industry without undermining the success of the land-based gambling industry.
